Today is March 8.
We are in Prague. Yesterday we played a show here, and today we are heading to Warsaw.
On this day, I want you to remember the women who are imprisoned in Russian jails for their beliefs. And not just today — remember them always.
International Women’s Day in Russia is an official state holiday, complete with a day off. Everything as it should be.In a country where domestic violence has effectively been legalized. In a country where, according to available information, 783 women are political prisoners.
And that doesn’t even include Ukrainian women prisoners of war.
We know at least something about the animalistic sadism they endure from the horrifying case of Ukrainian journalist Victoria Roshchyna, who was brutally tortured to death. Her body was returned without her trachea and internal organs — an apparent attempt to hide the evidence of torture.
And I’m sure she was not the only one.
This is not a bug. This is the system.
Hypocrisy. Double standards.
Putin publicly wishes women happiness, health, and prosperity — while sending missiles into residential buildings in Ukraine.
Just yesterday in Kharkiv, an elementary school teacher, Olena Udovychenko, was killed together with her young son.
I don’t know whether justice will ever come, or whether punishment will ever catch up with all these monsters. But I would very much like to live to see that day.
In the meantime, there is something we can do.
Write letters to the women imprisoned in Russian jails.Write kind words to them. Write to well-known women — but even more importantly, write to those whose names almost nobody knows. They are often the ones who need support the most.
And when you buy flowers today, send at least one “flower” to organizations that support political prisoners. For example, OVD-Info, an organization we have been working with for many years.
And perhaps the most important thing:
Love and respect are not formal bouquets once a year. They are not an obligation. They are a privilege granted to us, men.
And it is a privilege we must honor every single day.
