What is a digital detox?
A digital detox means taking a break from all screens, be it your phone, laptop, TV, smartwatch, even your smart fridge. It doesn’t mean abandoning modern life to become a forest hermit. It could be small measures like turning your phone off after dinner, avoiding social media for a weekend, or spending time outside without checking your email every twelve seconds. Even short breaks from tech can help you relax and feel more present in your own life.
Why we need it
The average US adult spends over seven hours a day staring at screens. That’s a lot of strain on the eyeballs! Too much screen time can lead to deteriorating vision and dry eyes, stress, anxiety, lower self-esteem, sad moods, and less physical activity. It can even impact your sleep, especially when you use screens late at night.
Tips to cut screen time
The best tip to cut screen time is disable useless notifications. If you check pointless notifications just to get rid of them, that’s unnecessary screen time. Similarly, keep your phone away or on Do Not Disturb during meals, bedtimes, or other important parts of your day. Focus mode is another useful option. You can also set hard limits on social media and other overused apps as a drastic measure to establish control over your screen time habits. Whenever possible, limit your usage to one screen at a time: don’t scroll your phone during TV commercials. Spend more time on offline activities. Reading, painting, even jigsaw puzzles! Anything that doesn’t feature screens can be a great break for your eyes and your mind. Remember, a digital detox doesn’t mean going cold turkey forever, simply giving your mind and your attention span a breather. Start small. Make it fun, not a punishment. You’ll soon see how much more connected you feel, to yourself, to others, and the world at large.
