This is a detailed guide to setting up your own local DNS server in Home Assistant, configuring DNS filtering, adding block lists, setting DNS on a Xiaomi BE6500 router, fixing IPv6 DNS bypass issues, and testing ad blocking before and after the setup.
With this setup, you do not need to install an ad blocker on every phone, laptop, Smart TV, tablet, TV box, or smart home device. Instead, we run Technitium DNS Server locally in Home Assistant and configure the router so that all devices in the home network use it as their DNS server.
As a result, advertising domains, trackers, analytics, telemetry, malware domains, and many unwanted requests can be blocked before they even reach your devices.
In this video, I install Technitium DNS Server in Home Assistant through Apps / Add-ons, choose the Host Network version, open the Web UI, change the default password, go through the main dashboard, explain Zones, Cache, Allowed, Blocked, Apps, DNS Client, Settings, DHCP, Administration, and Logs.
The most important part is the Blocking section. I show how to enable DNS blocking, choose NX Domain as the blocking type, add DNS block lists, update the lists, flush the DNS cache, and test if advertising domains are really blocked.
