If there’s one character that has been surrounded by uncertainty and expectations in this new world of superhero shared universes, it’s the friendly neighborhood Spider-man. The rights to Marvel’s marque character were sold off in the dark days of the House of Ideas to help keep the lights on at a time when Marvel couldn’t sell anyone on their shared universe ideas. By the time Marvel decided to set out on its own and prove its concept with the characters they had left, Spider-man was safely locked away. Two franchises later, Sony was struggling to get the most out of their webswinging property and the MCU was thriving. So they made a deal and Spider-man got two MCU movies and guest rolls in two Avenger’s films and a Captain America film that was essentially an Avengers film. Then the deal was done. Then it was brought back. Meanwhile, Sony has been forging ahead trying to create a universe out of Spider-man’s baddies. Well, the confusion has only gotten worse as it was announced that Jamie Foxx has been cast as Electro, a role he already played in a past franchise. Then Doctor Strange joined the team. Could these all be signs that the multiverse is going to claim Spider-man and give him the power that Fiege suggested, that Spider-man has the ability to live between worlds? More importantly, is this leading to Sony’s biggest dream, the Sinister Six? Will we finally see the Vulture, Scorpion, the Shocker, Morbius, Venom, and Electro team up? Or will Green Goblin join in the fray? Does Doctor Strange signal that we’ll get some version of One More Day? Let’s take a look.
