Superman Could Crush Homelander in a Fight

Garth Ennis’ comic series The Boys has become a huge sensation thanks to the adaptation on Amazon Prime that’s now in its second season. Characteristic to Ennis’ work, The Boys is a darkly satirical take on the concept of superheroes and in the center of that satire is the morally bankrupt Homelander. Homelander is the powerful patriotic center of The Boys version of Justice League or The Avengers and he bears more than a passing resemblance to two iconic superheroes. Homelander gets his patriotic veneer and chemical origins from the star spangled supersoldier, Captain America. The powerset, though, that’s pure Man of Steel. Superman and Homelander share a lot of powers. They’re both super strong. They’re both invulnerable. They both can fly. They both can shoot beams out of their eyes. They both have x-ray vision. Naturally, this raises the question, who would win in a fight? You can’t have two super beings with the same powerset without wanting them to have a bit of a showdown, can you? Can Superman maintain his composure in the face of a foe willing to cross disturbing moral lines that would make even Lex Luthor and The Joker blush? Can Homelander face someone who might actually be a challenge to his mighty might? Would the whole thing only be a warm up fight for the title card fight against Black Noir? Let’s look at some of the similarities and some of the differences between these two titans to see if we can’t sort out who would win in the showdown of superpowers.
