Things used to be a lot simpler for Dragon Ball fans. Sure, we have big space epics, huge colorful superhuman showdowns, Super Saiyan forms and all the screaming to power up you could ever want. In the good old days though, the most it took to get a Dragon Ball fan hyped was the Tenkaichi Budokai arcs! The World Martial Arts Tournament!
These were tournaments where the best of the best across the world would come to throw down so that they could prove who was truly number one. While that seems like a pretty straight forward premise, these matches were filled with hidden techniques, cheating, fake identities, possessions, cruel knock outs and, of course, that one announcer guy with sunglasses.
In a world where the Tournament of Power is still being talked about by anime fans because it was the coolest thing ever, it can be nice to look back on that simpler era and remark upon how awesome those showdowns were before Goku’s hair started changing colors all the time.
In this era, characters like Tien Shinhan, Piccolo Jr., and the mysterious Jackie Chun were the real threats to Goku’s supremacy. These were matches all about strategy, martial arts skills and secret signature moves. No one cared about power levels or form shifting. It was just about who was the more powerful and cunning warrior.
So let’s jump back into Dragon Ball’s past to look at the very best of the World Martial Arts Tournament!
