When people often list their favorite anime, there is usually not a separate conversation over whether or not the given show is an anime to begin with. Generally speaking, anime falls within a pretty well defined genre; animation developed in Japan with a particular aesthetic. However, there are certain shows that break that mold. There are a fair number of established anime that are in fact, produced outside of Japan. There are also anime that wouldn’t really fit the established “anime aesthetic” are those considered anime too?
During the early 2000s anime was beginning to get mainstream appeal, and as a result western cartoons began to adopt an anime aesthetic, dubbed “Japanimation” by some, early 2000 cartoons blurred the line between established western cartoons and anime. Now, one of the shows to come out of this era is Avatar the Last Airbender. Considered by many to be Nickelodeon’s greatest show, Avatar incorporated a lot of Eastern aesthetics and philosophy. The world of Avatar was largely inspired by countries like China, Japan, Inuit and Indian cultures. The music, aesthetics and themes explored in this show are so far removed from a typical western cartoon, and borrow a lot of tropes and ideas from anime, that fans have adopted it as a kind of pseudo anime. But is Avatar actually an anime? Most say no, but there has been a growing debate around the subject, which has only gotten bigger now that Avatar is on Netflix.
