Out of all the tropes in anime, perhaps the one people are the most fond of and hate the least is the Tournament arc. Any good battle anime worth their salt has a tournament arc. It is where a cast of characters are pitted against one another in a test of strength and skill and a victor is chosen. This can take many forms, like Battle City in Yugioh. There is no actual fighting, but instead characters determine their worth on a children’s card game. That’s right, pieces of cardboard determine the fates of duelists and indeed the world.

Then you have more traditional tournaments like the World Martial Arts Tournament in Dragon Ball that pits fighters in a one on one Street Fighter like battle for supremacy. Throughout the years, the tournament arc has been a staple of battle anime and has evolved over the years. Even recently, My Hero Academia had its first tournament arc, the Sport’s Festival which gave the trope a face lift on what it can accomplish. Today we are going to be looking at some of the most notable Tournament arcs in anime. We will be going into what makes these fights so memorable, from the famous Chunin Exams to Yu Yu Hakusho’s The Dark Tournament.
