True to its name, Avengers: Endgame was certainly an ending for a lot of things in the MCU. Primarily it was the end of the story of a few of the Avengers leading characters. Captain America, the tactical leader of the Avengers and their moral center, took a late retirement and finally got the life that he was told he needed. Black Widow ended up paying the big price for the Soul Stone. Tony Stark, of course, made the big sacrifice himself to bring Thanos’ menace to an end. While it was all very moving and a satisfying conclusion to the Infinity Saga, this is a superhero story and the things must go on. The problem is that there’s a bit of a leadership vacuum at the top. Who can lead the Avengers into the future? Why not Doctor Strange, the man who has actually seen the future?
While there are others with tactical experience like Sam Wilson who will transfer from the Falcon to Captain America with Rogers passing on his shield, but Wilson isn’t the public face type. T’Challa is a good man, but that’s already making it difficult to be king of his own country, leading a team of superheroes might be a bit much. Peter Parker has Spider-man problems of his own. Plus, you know, he’s a teenager. Captain Marvel and Thor are back in space, it might be time for Doctor Strange to be the leader that the Avengers need.
