Being Rick can be a tricky thing. Being the smartest person in the universe and there being an infinite universe of other Ricks who are also the smartest people in their universes is a burden. The one thing that unites them all other than their arrogance and self described smartest person status is the Portal Gun. Ricks and Ricks alone possess the technology to skip through the multiverse thanks to their trusty portal gun, allowing them to cause even more havoc. The problem becomes how do you reign in all that chaos so that the collective enemies that Ricks can accumulate? Well, a group of Ricks got the idea to form a committee, a Council of Ricks. Then they needed a place to have that council in its own pocket dimension. This became the Citadel of Ricks. But like any organization, it can get bogged down by its own weight. For a group made of Ricks who are rebellious by nature this can compound into a contradiction, can you organize a group of inherently rebellious people? But if you don’t will their activities eliminate the Ricks of the Central Finite Curve? Without the Citadel of Ricks, what do you do with all the Mortys that are orphaned by the adventures of their Ricks? For the Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland created Adult Swim show, the Citadel of Ricks is one of the only recurring elements of the very chaotic show. It’s even managed to encompass some of the other rare recurring elements like Birdperson and Tammy, Gearhead, and the various rebellion that Rick has participated in. Rick has also played his mild enemy of the Citadel of Ricks against his major enemies, the Galactic Federation. Since Rick and Morty can happen pretty fast, here’s some of the history and function of the Council of Ricks and why it matters to the multiverse of Rick & Morty.
