What the Five Year Gap in Avengers: Endgame Means for the MCU

One of the biggest shocks of the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Infinity Saga during Avengers: Endgame was the movie jumping forward five years after the death of Thanos. In a movie where we were hoping that the dire stakes of Avengers: Infinity War would be undone, it solidified that they wouldn’t be doing that, not entirely. Our original heroes, Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and the Hulk, all had to come to terms with what they lost and move forward before they were able to undo the snap and bring back the kinda gone. Even Ant-Man’s time machine wasn’t able to undo the consequences of Thanos’ devastation, just bring back some of the heroes we lost in the process. There is another reason, however, why the story might have jumped forward in time and that has much to do with the future of the MCU. With the original six down to a rough three, the stage is set for a new set of heroes. Not just the ones we’ve seen like Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and Captian Marvel, but upcoming heroes like She-Hulk, Blade, Moon Knight, and Ms Marvel. That doesn’t even begin to address characters that have returned to Marvel Studios like the Mutants and the Fantastic Four. The time skip might also have implications for a new generation of heroes to take over from the older group and in some cases their actual parents as the MCU moves towards the Young Avengers. Given what we know about Kevin Feige and the planning that went into the first three phases of the MCU, it stands to reason that the gap between the snap and the blip is more than just a narrative device for Endgame. Let’s look at some of the possibilities.
