Responsibility is core to who Spider-man is whether it’s in his previous film franchise at Sony, comic books, or the current version that exists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the death of Tony Stark at the end of Avengers: Endgame fans and characters alike have been asking who was going to take on that role that Iron Man filled. Not only has Iron Man been the standard bearer of the MCU, ushering in new characters and bringing them together or tearing them apart, depending on where they were in the story, Iron Man was a leading figure and one of the most recognizable characters in the MCU. While RDJ and Iron Man have become huge icons since their and the MCU’s debut in 2008’s Iron Man, Spider-man remains one of the most recognizable and popular characters Marvel has ever created, so it stands to reason that the assumption would be that Spider-man would take the place of Iron Man. But this is a fundamental misunderstanding of who Spider-man is as a character and what his role has been in the comics and his development as a hero in the MCU. Like the other marque Avengers in the MCU like The Hulk, Thor, Captain American, and even Iron Man, Spider-man has a unique trajectory to the role of superhero that means he’s not meant to be the next Iron Man but the first Spider-man.
