References to popular culture have become a mainstay of popular culture since at least the 1990s. Since then the meta understanding of characters that live in world of media and are aware of the conventions of modern storytelling and even that they might be in one has become the norm. The term ‘meta’ has become a common part of modern storytelling, including the meta use of meta for characters to recognize that’s what we’re doing. Rick & Morty dives the deepest into this world, making dozens of film and television references in every episode. From sci fi classics like Zardoz and The Road Warrior to modern movies like Inception, Rick & Morty makes a lot of use of popular culture. Co-creator Dan Harmon made his name with the cult sitcom hit Community which was as much about being a television show as it was community college. Harmon and co-creator Justin Roiland have taken that ball and run with it with the freewheeling sci fi comedy. Since Rick can skip to an infinite number realities he can find himself in Purge worlds or in the middle of a modern superhero movie or encounter characters out of a Stephen King novel like Needful Things or Stand By Me. Then there’s the science that Rick can get up to that might resemble classic stories like Fantastic Voyage or Lawnmower Man. While you don’t need to know the references to find the show funny, they do provide a little insight into the creator’s mind and world. Let’s look at some of the bigger references that Rick & Morty have used to build some of their classic episodes.
