Casting is a long and complicated process. Things can change, schedules can not line up, first choices can be at a point where they want to make changes in their careers or where their careers have already changed. Either way, you don’t always end up with the people you started with. That’s especially true in a massive franchise like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Characters like Thor, Black Widow, Star-Lord, Iron Man, Spider-man, Doctor Strange, Drax, Gamora and more could all have been played by very different actors. SOmetimes it’s just a product of timing, where a title like the Incredible Hulk might take too long in production and the rights end up in different hands. Sometimes it’s just a bit of wishful thinking on fans parts that puts notable actors like Tom Cruise or Joseph Gordon-Levitt in roles that fans think they’d be great in. Other times actors like Jason Momao might not want to play too much of the same kind of role, to branch out into other things. Sometimes, it’s a role that the actor really wants, like Zachary Levi, or Liam Hemsworth, but the fickle hand of fate has other plans. Either way it’s fun to look back at castings that didn’t happen and try to imagine what could have been. For a franchise like Marvel where the characters appear and reappear over the course of several movies it becomes difficult to think of anyone else taking those roles, even if some roles have changed actors over the course of the franchise. Let’s look at some of the castings that almost happened and try and imagine an MCU that could have been.
