Pop culture is the single most important thing in the entire world. Forget world peace, forget climate change, pop culture is the thing that’s going to unite us all in perfect harmony.
Okay, maybe that’s a little extreme, but we wouldn’t be making this video and you wouldn’t be listening to it if you we all didn’t love pop culture. Although it seems like it’s own little genre of pop culture, anime has never been afraid to throw out references and homages to other famous instances of pop culture to oftentimes hilarious results.
Look at all the characters in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, who were named after legendary rockers and musicians. Look at One Piece’s real-life character inspirations like Jim Carrey and Mikhail Gorbachev. Look at how for some reason characters from Pulp Fiction turn up in Kill La Kill or when Squidward Tentacles himself makes an appearance in Gurren Lagann.
The point is, anime has had a long history of throwing in subtle, and not so subtle, references to pop culture and, today, we’re going to be talking about some of the best, most hilarious references ever. So check out the video and don’t forget to leave a comment after you’re done. If you like this video, hit that subscribe button so you’ll never miss another CBR video.
