Anime has seen a lot of different characters with varying degrees of powers. Some anime MCs are overpowered and some are underpowered. However, there are some characters who just can’t control their powers. Whether that comes from inexperience or a lack of fundamental understanding, it’s fun to see a main character just go buck wild and completely go off the rails. Part of the hook for a show could be having this main character develop and learn to control their powers. That’s certainly one of the themes behind My Hero Academia and Izuku Midoriya’s character arc. The idea of a main character with a larger than life power and them growing into it so they can one day harness and control that power seems fundamentally interesting.

Today, we’ll be looking into some of these characters with powers that’re chaotic, uncontrollable or that can be pretty unpredictable. While the characters in this list may at some point control their powers, at one point, they didn’t and the process by which they learned to control their powers was part of their character arc. We’ll be looking at some of the most recent examples, but we’re also going to look at some classics as well, showing this trope goes back to the early days of anime. Who’d you add to this list?
