Time travel can be a complicated thing. There’ve been many stories about people going into the past to affect the future and there’ve been just as many different sets of rules for how that time travel is supposed to work. Comic book stories aren’t above taking a trip through time and their cinematic counterparts have followed suit.
In the epic conclusion to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Infinity Saga, Avengers: Endgame, time travel played a key role in undoing Thanos’ deadly snap. This meant that not only did the Avengers visit their past adventures, but thanks to a mix up involving the Hulk and Loki, they also managed create some alternate timelines, as explained by the Ancient One. One of the big shocks in Endgame was when Steve Rogers took a detour at the end of his quest to return the stones to their original places in time. That last trip was to fulfil a promise he made all the way back in 1945 to Peggy Carter to return and have that dance that he missed out on when he saved the world from Hydra the first time. But did he create another reality where he was able to marry Peggy Carter or were there in fact two Captain Americas existing simultaneously in the MCU the entire time? Let’s look at how Captain America managed to co-exist next to a retired Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
