Deku in My Hero Academia has quickly shot up the ranks as one of the best anime protagonists of all time. Sure, he might cry a lot, but his character is always striving to do whatever it takes to become the best hero he can be, like his idol All Might. Not only has this perpetual underdog continued to grow and mature, but he’s also inspired everyone else around him to be better people and highlighted the ideals every hero should strive for.

That’s not to say Deku is perfect. In almost every situation he’s in, Deku finds himself underestimated. It made a lot of sense when he was quirkless, like when he told his classmates he wanted to go to UA or when a terrifying sludge monster wanted to use him as a human meat puppet, but since All Might gave him the One For All quirk, he’s done his best to prove himself strong enough to never be underestimated again.

But now that Deku is on the path to become a hero, he’s fighting stronger and stronger bad guys, like the terrifying villain Muscular, who was quick to underestimate Deku and his naive ideals about what it means to be a hero. It seems like, no matter what, Deku will always be underestimated wherever he goes. That’s alright, though. It just gives him more of an opportunity to shine.
