Comic books, superhero comic books at the very least, are an exercise in the improbable and sometimes outright impossible. Like any form of science fiction, the superhero story can range from ‘hard’ fiction, grounded in current scientific understanding, to fantastical science, only beholden to Arthur C Clarke’s rule that significantly advanced science would be indistinguishable from magic. Being a product of the Silver Age of comics, most of the superheroes are based on technology and science, but while the creators are careful to base their stories on current science, there’s always a tweak.
Radiation gives you superpowers. A sufficiently gifted and financed engineer can create an impossible technology. For both the Marvel comics and the MCU, the most prominent industrialist genius is Tony Stark and his Iron Man suit. While its base principles are grounded in technology we’re developing now, some of it is ahead of our time. Here are some of the ways that the Invincible Iron Man pushes the boundaries of science.
