ANIME COUPLES WITH TURBULENT PASTS. Are perfect love stories too unrealistic for you? Well, we know of some great anime with couples who used to be at each other’s throats!
This is CBR’s list of 10 Anime Where Enemies Became Lovers.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The best love stories are usually born from some sort of conflict. Even if romance isn’t the main theme of an anime, having a romantic element always helps bring some depth to the characters and the story. It’s interesting to watch Bulma and Vegeta’s relationship evolve over the course of Dragon Ball Z from mortal enemies to frenemies to will-they-won’t-they to “look, here’s your son from the future!” to marriage to Vegeta changing baby-Bulma’s diaper. And even though Usagi and Mamoru’s romance was preordained from a past life and you know they’re going to hook up, it’s still fun watching all the arguing, insulting and banter that led up to it.
The jury is still out on some of these romances, like Maya Kitajima and Masumi Hayami from Glass Mask, whose romance has been on the back burner on a slow simmer for no less than four decades. Okay, the characters haven’t been waiting that long, but the fans sure have! If you’re not familiar with the series, it’s an incredibly popular, long-running shojo manga series clocking in at 49 volumes and counting over 3 different anime series. Maya and Masumi have two relationships: one where their public personas hate each other and another where Masumi’s alter-ego and Maya are in love. They clearly both love each other deeply, but a combination of pride, societal expectations, history, careers and a fiancee keep getting in their way.
We love nuanced love stories like this and we hope our picks have inspired a weekend romantic anime binge-fest for at least some of you.
