We have had our fair share of Spider-Man movies within the past decade or so. Naturally, when we heard they were revamping the Spider-Man franchise, we were a bit skeptical. However, Tom Holland has done an excellent job at surprising us. Perhaps the funniest Spider-Man to date, Holland brings in a new and refreshing take on Spider-Man. For instance, he did most of his own stunts. He is trained in classical dance, parkour running, and gymnastics, which makes him a perfect Spider-Man. These skills also created a more emotive Spidey, who effectively communicated emotions through body language. Like the contrast between awkward and uncomfortable Peter Parker and fluid and graceful Spider-Man.
We also see a more realistic high school student in Tom Holland. That’s because he went to a real science academy high school in New York and enrolled as a student there. Undercover of course. He was also required to watch a couple John Hughes movies to get a good sense of teen angsts. Kevin Feige wanted the characters to have a Hughes feel to them. Which ended up working out as we got great characters and awesome humor.
This Spidey also stayed true to his Queens roots as opposed to swinging around Manhattan. We get to see him trying to figure out and balance his powers and school life, all the while facing uncertainty.
