For many years, live action superhero productions were considered to be lowbrow and cheesy, with very few garnering any critical acclaim or commercial success. Christopher Reeve as Superman, Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman and Michael Keaton as Batman were three of the only superhero actors to come away from their roles smelling of roses, while the likes of Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Helen Slater, Michael Jai White and Shaquille O'Neal were ripped to shreds for their performances as Batman, Supergirl, Spawn and Steel respectively.
