Parentage can be a pretty big deal when it comes to genre characters. Whether you’re rebelling against good parents or rebelling against bad parents or living up to the expectations of good parents or failing in the expectations of exceptional parents, there’s two things that are usually true. They shaped the life of the superhero and they’re probably dead. Or you thought they were dead. Or they thought you were dead. It’s all very complicated. It gets even more complicated when the hero doesn’t have a firm grasp of their history, because that history is going to get rewritten a few times. Wanda Maximoff has been the child of Romani parents, then old silver age heroes, then Magneto, then back to a different but related pair of Romani parents, this time with Scarlet Witch powers. Part of the reason that Wanda has so many origins is her particularly important place in the Marvel Universe as a Nexus Being, someone who acts as a pivot point in the intersections of realities, and naturally very powerful. One of those proposed parents could play a key role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Scarlet Witch’s future and the future of the MCU. Magneto just might be the one to save the day. Magneto is a key point in the story House of M, and we’re getting pretty close to the beginning of that story with Wanda’s twins both existing and clearly shouldn’t be existing.
