Mutants are the signature superheroes of Marvel Comics. Sure they have a lot of the regular style heroes that get their powers from science or aliens or magic, but in the world of Marvel those born with their powers are classified as Mutants. While the people of the Marvel world might have a complex set of feelings about people with powers in general, those who were just born with their powers are subject to an extra level of suspicion. Often used as an allegory for Civil Rights, Mutants fight for their place in society. Though unlike most civil rights issues, the subjects inherently possess powers that are often offensive in nature...which is to say, they are in fact weapons. In a world that is afraid of Mutants and Mutants have powers, someone somewhere is going to start ranking those mutants based on their power or their ability to use that power to do some damage. But after over half a century of rankings just what do all those terms mean? Just what is it to be an Omega Level Mutant and is that different than being an Omega Level Threat? Maybe we should just use numbers? But then which directions are the numbers going? There have been so many classifications and the shifting sands of what they mean that it can be hard to sort out. Here’s an overview of how the terms have been used and what they might mean.
Chapters:
00:00 Intro
00:32 The Mutants of 616
04:13 Omegas
07:34 Alternate Timelines
