As the only character featured on both Mortal Kombat 10 and 11’s video game cover, Scorpion has become somewhat of a legend in the fighting game genre. While he has an amazingly cool design, user-friendly, yet effective moves such as teleportation, hellfire punch, and of course, his signature move Spear, the resurrected ninja and member of the Shirai Ryu, has quite a tragic past.

Scorpion started his life as a human named Hanzo Hasashi as the son of a former Shirai Ryu clan member. His father who left the clan to live a life of peace was against Hanzo’s plan to join the assassin group, but the young man who wanted to provide enough for his small family went against his father’s wishes, and joined anyway. Becoming one of the most prominent members of the clan, Hanzo was assigned to retrieve the Map of Elements for the evil necromance Quan Shi. The problem is, Sub-Zero of the rival Lin Kuei clan was sent out for the same exact mission. In a temple atop the Himalyan mountains, the two met and engaged into battle. Sub-Zero (also known as Bi-Han) claimed victory over Hanzo, which prompted Quan Chi to resurrect the Shirai Ryu member as the spectral Scorpion we know today. Scorpion’s origin story is full of surprises, tragedy, and betrayals.

In today’s Mortal Kombat video, I will explain what led the Earthrealm warrior Hanzo Hasashi to become Scorpion, how the Shirai Ryu came to be, and why Scorpion was seeking revenge on Sub-Zero of the Lin Kuei clan
