The man who can do whatever a spider can and the Captain whose mighty shield compels all those who oppose his shield to yield are two of the most iconic members of the Marvel Universe. Spider-man and Captain America have been popular keystones for Marvel Comics, in Cap’s case dating all the way back before there really was a Marvel Comics. They share a lot in common, and not just in their physical prowess. Steve Rogers was the scrawny kid who wouldn’t take “no” for an answer when it came to volunteering for the US Army in the build up to World War II. He is Doctor Erskine’s ideal, someone who would respect strength and use it responsibly. Responsibility is also a big sticking point for Peter Parker, the scrawny kid who volunteered for nothing but instead got bitten by a radioactive spider granting him the ability to stick to walls and giving him the proportionate strength of a spider. He also got a speed upgrade and a heightened danger sense to give him the ability to fight costumed criminals. While Rogers was born with a hatred for bullies and an over confidence that he could deal with them, Peter’s sense of responsibility is rooted in tragedy when a criminal he could have stopped killed his Uncle who just so happened to have the most famous advice in all of comics, “With great power also comes great responsibility.” Is getting spider powers enough for Captain America to become Spider-Man? Lets take a look.
