The rival character in an anime really has the toughest life of them all, existing solely to knocked off of their pedestal of superiority and spend the rest of the franchise standing in the shadow of the goody-two-shoes hero. And so is the fate of none other than the alien prince himself, ever destined to attempt and fail to surpass his hated rival, Kakarot, in Akira Toriyama’s classic Dragon Ball series.
For decades, Vegeta has aimed to prove himself the superior warrior to the equally spiky-haired do-gooder, and for decades he has failed, despite a vast number of power-ups and victories… and several impressive feats and changes in his character that might actually make him surpass Goku… in all other areas than actual power, that is.
From his royal upbringing to his unique fighting style and further to his abilities to better control and understand the attributes of his species, Vegeta actually does have one over on Goku in a lot of interesting areas that may not be apparent at a first glance, but come to the surface once you take a deeper look at his character arc… cause he gets one of those too, as opposed to the more static hero.
Across three different TV shows, a whole lot of manga and a buttload of Movies, the spiky-haired monarch has proven himself quite the character time and time again, and it’s high time we allow ghim to have a few victories. So here it is - all the reasons that he, and he alone, is actually superior - just not in the areas he’d prefer to be.
