World War Hulk: How Captain America's 'New World Order' Might Set the Stage

One of the unique aspects of a shared universe is that no movie is ever just one story. Sure the headliner gets all the attention, but whether it’s the larger saga moving through the story or another character making a debut or a big change, the movies can also be someone else’s story. Spider-man has included Tony Stark, Nick Fury, and Steven Strange in his narratives, the Black Widow appeared in four Avengers movies and two Iron Man movies before she eventually got her own posthumous headliner. Perhaps the biggest participant in the world of the B-story is Bruce Banner, the Incredible Hulk. After being the second Avenger out of the gate at the very beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Hulk remains one of the few Avengers to get his own sequel. That has to do with a deal that Marvel Studios made with Universal before they were gobbled up by Disney. Under that deal, any Hulk headliner movie would be distributed by Universal instead of Buena Vista, Disney’s distribution arm. As a result popular comic Hulk storylines like Planet Hulk have had to piggyback on other hero movies like Thor Ragnarok. With the casting announcements for Captain America New World Order one thing stands out pretty loudly: This Captain America movie is chock full of Hulk characters. Samuel Sterns, aka The Leader, is set to be the big bad. Newly minted Captain America Sam Wilson will be going head to head with a now President Ross, Bruce Banner’s ideological foe in The Incredible Hulk. Even long lost love interest Betty Ross played by Liv Tyler is set to make a return. With all these Hulk characters, it raises the question, is New World Order a prelude to World War Hulk?
