We all know that 2020 has been a very strange year for movies, with many of the biggest films delayed - and then delayed again - and many others going straight to streaming, or some hybrid between streaming and a theatrical release. The bottom line is that even while Hollywood tried to figure out how to get its product out to the public in new ways, we the viewing audience also had to adapt to these strange new circumstances, even while adjusting our expectations regarding what films would even be released in 2020. And yet despite it all, some great movies did manage to be released.
From the purely escapist to the powerfully topical, this year's nominees cover the gamut but all are highly entertaining and thought-provoking. There are real-life dramas, sci-fi spectacles, period pieces, superheroes and spies, absurd comedies and unsettling thrillers. These are our picks for the very best films released in the very worst of recent years. Which brings us to our best movie of 2020 nominations.
