Warner Bros.' Birds of Prey was a breath of fresh air for DC's line of live-action films, and a big part of that can be credited to director Cathy Yan's vision. The film, which was Yan's second-ever, follows her similarly irreverent debut indie, Dead Pigs, which was inspired by the 2013 Huangpu River incident, also explored the interconnected lives of people, from different walks of life, living in China.
We got a chance to talk with Cathy Yan about Dead Pigs and discussed the stylistic choices that she brought from that film to Birds of Prey, from cinematography, lighting, color, and costuming.
Dead Pigs is available for streaming on MUBI.
