The Most Expensive Video Games Ever

Hundreds of people, thousands of hours and millions dollars are needed to create the largest AAA games. The gaming industry has come quite a long way since the days when a dozen or so people could create a fully developed, best-of-breed game in less than a year. When you calculate how much money a title like Super Mario Bros. compared to the relatively small amount of real money Nintendo probably spent to create it, the profit is in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

With this in mind, as well as what a bestseller can present these days, a publisher can easily decide to spend tens of millions on development and get a net profit at the same time. The actual cost of developing a modern AAA game, even in terms of having to pay the salaries of these hundreds of people over sometimes several years of work, is staggering. And that's without considering the huge marketing budgets of most games. Nevertheless, in this list you will see not only those titles that were created in this generation, but also in the previous one, and they are all among the most expensive in history.

However, it should be noted that the figures in this list are based entirely on information provided by developers or publishers, i.e. we cannot be sure of their authenticity. Perhaps there are other games that could make this list. Also, if any company did not announce "official" amounts of spent funds in relation to a particular game, we did not include it in the list. And finally, all the titles presented below include development and marketing costs and do not take into account inflation, which is also very important.
