In the mid-2000s, two of cinema's most historic franchises reinvented themselves at the same time. Christopher Nolan put a darker, grittier Bruce Wayne under the cowl in Batman Begins, while Martin Campbell and the 007 team crafted a more grounded origin story for James Bond. The gritty reboot wasn't born with Batman Begins and Casino Royale, but the industry forces at play put them at the high water mark of the trend. Here's how Batman and Bond became the best of the gritty reboot.
We got to talk to Batman Begins writer David S. Goyer, Casino Royale director Martin Campbell and former Warner Brothers production exec Lorenzo di Bonaventura about how these films came together at a time when Bruce Wayne and James Bond needed a drastic reimagining.
In the years since Batman Begins in 2005 and Casino Royale in 2006, we've come to expect the darker, more grounded approach around hollywood tentpoles. Man of Steel and Zack Snyder's entire Snyder-verse up to Justice League is perhaps the most obvious example, but even Snow White and The Huntsman took a crack at it. Marvel and Fox tried the approach with a Fantastic Four reboot, while Robert Downey Jr. took Sherlock Holmes on a more grim, drug-laced Sherlock Holmes adventure than we'd seen before. But like every trend, the gritty reboot has a beginning, a middle and an end.
