Pixar has just released the new Lightyear trailer starring Chris Evans, and it raised a ton of questions about how this Buzz Lightyear movie fits in with the larger Toy Story canon that Pixar Animation Studios has been developing over the last two decades. In this Lightyear trailer breakdown, we’re going to discuss how the Buzz Lightyear in the Lightyear (2022) trailer relates to the toy Buzz Lightyear voiced by Tim Allen since 1995’s original Toy Story.

Disney announced that they were going to make a Buzz Lightyear film way back in December 2020 during a Disney’s Investor Day presentation. Pixar CCO Pete Docter said, “We designed Buzz LightYear with the idea that he was a toy based on some really cool character from an epic blockbuster film. Well, all these years later we decided it’s time to make that film.” But it’s still unclear whether the Lightyear (2022) movie actually takes place in the Toy Story universe or it its its own thing.

Throughout the rest of the Lightyear trailer breakdown, we’re going to take a deeper dive into this new Buzz Lightyear movie trailer and see how it relates to other Toy Story spin-offs like the 2000 direct-to-video movie “Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins” and the follow-up TV Series “Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.”

And finally, we’ll also explore how Disney could potentially treat those old Buzz Lightyear endeavors in a similar way to how Star Wars removed the Expanded Universe from canon and just rebranded it “Star Wars Legends”.
