Marvel Games' has taken a new approach to its video games in recent years, and it hasn't attempted to follow in the footsteps of Marvel Studios' interconnected MCU. With the dawn of a new Marvel Games in 2016, we trace the company's approach to its Marvel video games in recent years and how it's led to a new, exciting, and risky era for Marvel. From the first wave of Marvel Games' Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, Marvel's Spider-Man, Telltale's Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Avengers Project, we explore how the original wave of Marvel's new era demonstrated the goals and intentions of what Marvel Games could be.

From there, we trace how new experiments and safe bets like VR projects and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 helped expand our understanding of what Marvel Games wanted to accomplish in this new era, and how Marvel's Spider-Man changed the game for what Marvel games could be. We dig into its successes, the challenges Marvel's Avengers has faced, and the many other Marvel entries during this period before looking ahead to Marvel's next phase of games, including Guardians of the Galaxy, Insomniac's Wolverine and Spider-Man 2, and Midnight Suns.
