Actor Willem Dafoe thinks that all the criticism, the shade, the outright hatred lobbed at the Green Goblin’s original mask is what spurred the powers-that-be to change the villain’s look in Spider-Man: No Way Home. In an interview with the New York Times where he speaks upon #SpidermanNoWayHome, the actor revealed what he thinks led to him smashing his mask instead of smashing pumpkins, by saying, “I must be honest, I am aware that there was some criticism of that [Green Goblin] mask in the original [Sam Raimi Spider-Man]. We heard it enough that it was probably a consideration, to change it up a little bit. I don’t think about that because I don’t think about emoting with my face. My face follows my heart. It’s just an expression of what you’re feeling.”While the Green Goblin did in fact wear a mask in the comics and the classic Fox Kids animated series, his face was far more expressive than the static mask worn by Dafoe in the original Raimi #Spiderman film.
