A lot of esports started, and thrived, as a grassroots movement. Locals organized tournaments blossomed into major events that laid the foundations of many long-time pros. Over time, the devs of those games got more and more involved, and while some boosted the scenes to new levels, others messed things up, or were outright hostile.

Today we're going to outline the good, the bad, and the ugly of dev support in esports, how it can impact the scene for the better or worse, and how Nintendo specifically eventually came around to (sort of) embrace Smash Bros.
