Russia won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2008. Dima Bilan and his song Believe brought the contest to Moscow in 2009.

Russia has been one of the most successful countries in recent years with one victory, 4 second places and 3 third places since 2000.

The Buranovskiye Babushki ended in second place after Loreen in 2012 with their song Party For Everybody. Polina Gagarina also ended second after Sweden, in 2015 with her song A Million Voices. Dima Bilan participated twice in the contest. Before he won the contest, he entered with Never Let You Go, and came second in 2006. Alsou co-hosted the contest of 2009 but also represented Russia in 2000 with the song Solo. Second place was also her destination. Last year Russia got represented by Sergey Lazarev. With his song You Are The Only One Sergey won the televote and ended at a very respectable 3rd place after Ukraine and Australia. Russian girl band Serebro represented Russia in 2007 and came third with Song #1. The girls from t.A.T.u. who were very popular across Europe in the early 2000's represented Russia in 2003. With a very small margin, they ended up in third place, just after Turkey and Belgium. In 2013, Russia got represented by Dina Garipova who sang What if. She ended up in fifth place. The Tolmachevy Sisters represented Russia the year after, with their song Shine.
