Vevo Meets: Mr Eazi. 2017
A good groove is hard to resist. No wonder the critically-heralded Afrobeats sound has been making its way around the world in the last couple of years. WizKid has connected with Drake to further the music, and Mr Eazi is making tracks that Westerners can’t resist. The Nigerian native reps Banku music, which blends rubbery vocal styles from Ghana and more pulsating rhythms of his homeland. A little highlife, a hip-hop influence – in Eazi’s hands, it’s one of the most entertaining new strains of dance music around. You can see it in his video for “Fight” featuring DJ Cuppy, and hear it in on “Leg Over,” from his new mixtape, ‘Life Is Eazi, Vol. 1: Accra to Lagos.’
The 25-year-old was one of Ghana’s biggest party promoters until he caught the fever to be onstage himself. Now his music is grabbing lots of ears in the UK and US. In our Vevo Meets profile, he explained how he hustled in university to make some money, was influenced by Dr. Alban and Fela Kuti, and knew he was making his way up the ladder when he showed up to a London studio and found he was working on an Ellie Goulding track.
