Goldlink on New Music and Life in DMV. 2017
GoldLink has described his sound as “future bounce” – it's a lively mix of rap, R&B, and go-go, the ever-evolving funk mutations that have come straight outta Washington, D.C. since the '70s. The MC boasts a lethal flow and has a knack for mixing fierce club bangers with hard-hitting grooves. He came out blazing in 2014 with the mixtape 'The God Complex' (which was stuffed with sly samples, from the 'Men In Black' theme to Britney Spears' “Toxic”). Soon after, he kicked it up a notch with 'And After That, We Didn't Talk.’ His profile got a significant boost when he was named to XXL magazine's Top 10 Freshman Class (Fetty Wap and Vince Staples were other notable members that year).
And GoldLink is making even bigger waves with the recent release of his superb debut disc, 'At What Cost,' which features collabs with his D.C. pals Wale, Ciscero, Shy Glizzy – and Mýa. It reps hard for the DMV’s regional culture. When he came into the Vevo office we would up chatting about the scene around the go-go parties that he took part in growing up, and his mission to have the DMV get “its just due.” He calls ‘At What Cost’ an ode to the area.
“My goal was really having people understand what DC is, and not what they perceive it to be.”
