Wolf Alice On Cults, Playing Make Believe and Visions of a Life

Wolf Alice bubbled up in the London clubs, dropped a couple propulsive EPs, and then came crashing into view of the world with its clever and caustic debut, ‘My Love Is Cool.’ The band’s use of drama can be terrifying. A strum of chiming guitars will surround the vocals of Ellie Rowsell, and moving from a coo to a yelp, she’ll summon the fires and the band will scorch everything in sight…and have you singing along while it happens. There’s value in that kind of purging, and the critics saluted My Love Is Cool; it was nominated for a both a GRAMMY and Mercury Music Prize.

Follow-ups are hard and growth is intriguing, so we made a point check in with Wolf Alice when there were recently in Brooklyn. They’re finalizing their new ‘Visions of a Life’ album, which was written in a cold London basement and recorded in the heat of LA’s Echo Park. Kim Taylor Bennett sat down the foursome and found out about the explosive emotions of “Yuk Foo,” why this is what Rowsell calls a “personal record” and how the album title references “things that can or can’t be.”
