Two things you should know about this song: 1. I've been listening to a lot of early Beatles lately. 2. This song has no point other than to be badass. Well, that's not entirely true. I actually feel like I could write an essay on this song. And I can't tell you how to interpret it (but this is how you should interpret it). Like many of you, I'm not feeling super patriotic these days, BUT over the last year I have been coming to terms with - dare I say even "embracing" - my Americanness. Anyone who's grown up or spent time overseas understands the dichotomy of being from the U.S. One one hand, you're from the land of opportunity and excess and movie stars, and everybody wants to know what it's like, and on the other YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF. Or at least that's how it felt. And it still feels that way. And I get it. But at the same time, I've come to really appreciate our gritty, scrappy, rock star, "I'm doin' this my way," disregard for authority and protocol and niceties. It's this weird double-edged sword. Because the things I hate about the U.S.A.'s image - the vulgar, in-your-face, quest to be Number One - those are some pretty powerful traits. They can be channeled to make awesome art. They can be used for good, even though they usually aren't. I don't know...maybe this doesn't make any sense. Does anyone else feel like the stuff that makes the U.S. shitty is "spun from the same material" that makes it really fucking badass?

All American Blues by Pomplamoose

LYRICS

Eyes starin’ at me
Soakin’ up my shameless
Got my Ray Bans on
Because I’m almost famous
If you don’t like my temper
You can just go home
Cause I got plenty to say
Into this microphone
Oooo

Don’t overlook me
And my knock off bag
Cause I was born in the middle
Now I’m upper-classy
And if I’m not invited
Well then fuck this place
Cause I got plenty to do
And I got pennies to save
Oooo

Who’s got the biggest chip on their shoulder
Who’s got the All American Blues
You may be smarter, richer and older
But I got somethin’ to prove

Cruisin’ my Hyundai
To the Super Mart
Am I a piece of work
Or just a work of art
Bitch I’m a shark with a smile
And I’ll show my teeth
I got an appetite
Bigger than all you can eat
Oooo
