In December 2018, 21 Savage dropped the J. Cole-assisted “a lot” as the lead single from his sophomore studio album, 'I Am Greater Than I Was.' The DJ Dahi-produced track later drew attention for 21’s additional verse criticizing US immigration policy, which 21’s lawyers speculate led to him being targeted by ICE and subsequently arrested. However, Cole initially turned heads when “a lot” was first released with bars pointing to controversial rapper 6ix9ine as a cautionary tale for young rappers using trolling and memes to promote their careers.
