In honor of Nike’s annual celebration, Air Max Day, Nike and Genius teamed up to take a look into our lyrical data to find out more about Air Max’s influence on the genre.
Ever since its inception in 1987, the Nike Air Max has become one of the most iconic sneakers of streetwear. Combining comfort and flair, its signature design of a cushioned bubble has outlasted various fashion trends over the years.
The Air Max has also naturally found its way into hip-hop, with KRS-One noted as one of the first rappers to reference Nike on Boogie Down Productions’ ’87 track “Dope Beat.” Since then, Air Max’s have been famously referenced by rappers like Ghostface Killah, Eminem, and Jay-Z.
