Laura Branigan performs live "How Can I Help You To Say Goodbye" at ending of NBC TV program "Today Show" on Sunday, February 20, 1994.
This beautiful song, written by Karen Taylor-Good and Burton Banks Collins, is a hymn about the pain of saying goodbye and the grief of loss a loved one. Laura loved to perform sad songs, they were her favorites. She once said "to me the most powerful emotion is pain".
She recorded and included "How Can I Help You To Say Goodbye" as the first track on her seventh and most personal studio album "Over My Heart" released in August 17, 1993. The song was released as a single with "I'll Wait For You" in 1994 and also was included on the greatest hits album "The Best of Branigan" in 1995.
* Doug Morris, record executive, introduced Laura to the song. "He was sort of my mentor over Atlantic, and he brought that song to me," Branigan recalls. "He just said, 'I have this amazing song.' When he played it for me, all I did was sob. It was so sad. That's how that one came about. Branigan admits that the song's sad content made it difficult to record. "Phill Ramone produced it. He was in the engineer's room and I was in the vocal booth, and just the pain [in the song] - I kept breaking down and he'd break down, so I'd have to start over. And I'd say, 'Now I have to think in something else,' but I didn't want to, because I didn't want to lose the emotion. I wanted to be there and be with the emotion when I sang it, exactly with the words I was singing."
"So it was a hard song to get through, and it's harder on stage, especially when you see people in the audience wiping their eyes." (*Quote from Billboard magazine article "They're playing my song". March 30, 1996).
