Attention LB's fans! - A new and beautiful song of Laura Branigan comes to light! 😄
We started this new year happy because we have a super special gift to all of you. It is a great honor for me as a fan to present today an unpublished gem of Laura Branigan's legacy, a song whose name we knew from few mentions by promoter Sid Bernstein, on some articles of 1983, as the original song Laura performed for him in 1977, and after which Sid, very moved by her singing, accepted be her manager. This historic piece is "A Rose And A Tear" a sad and poignant love song written and composed by Laura in the late 70's. Sincerely I never thought that one day we would have the fortune to hear and enjoy it, luckily I was wrong. I'm very thankful for having it! 😊 Enjoy and share!
"A Rose And A Tear"
by Laura Branigan
"I remember the time that you gave me the rose,
that lay pressed in the pages of poems and prose,
that you read to me after the moon was out.
And, the flame from the candle would dance about to your voice,
in soft motion.
Looking up at the notion, I'd fallen to slumber.
In silence I lay.
I was hiding the tear that weld in my heart.
Like the rose, the night fall, the tear has it's part.
For the night that you gave me the rose was the night that you left.
You had no choice, I suppose.
You had said you'd return the next day, but I knew you would not.
So the rose and the tear I have saved.
Now the rose is all faded, it's scent almost gone.
But, the tear in my heart will make it live on.
For the life of a flower will always be in the heart of the given, in memory.
That night, when you gave me the rose,
the night that you left, you had no choice I suppose.
You had said you'd return the next day, but I knew you would not.
So, the rose and the tear I have saved."
In context - "A Rose And A Tear" is one of the songs written and composed by Laura after her return from the tour of Europe as a chorister by Leonard Cohen in 1976 when, very confident of her talent and determined to start a professional career as soloist, began to write her own songs that defined her style rather poetic and "delicate in the lyrics" than commercial but always intimate and emotional.
In 1977, Laura went into the maelstrom of the great metropolis looking for contacts and people in the industry as well as artistic opportunities, auditioned for Broadway and record companies but was rejected in both because her voice did not fit. So it was that, one good day on the streets of New York City, she met the legendary music promoter, Sid Bernstein, the man who brought The Beatles to U.S. in 1964 and who helped to build the career of many artists and bands. Laura told him about her talent and asked him for an audition. He agreed. Among the songs of her own repertoire, "A Rose And A Tear" and "Memories" were those with which she touched Sid's heart and made him cry of emotion. So it was Sid accepted to be her first manager.
From then, he tried to introduce Laura in the show business presenting mini shows in his office at the Radio Music Hall in front a selected audience. Towards the end of 1978, among other remarkable previous efforts, Sid organized two weeks solo concerts for Laura at Reno Sweeney's nightclub in Greenwhich Village, New York in which she sang her own compositions and also did versions of songs by Barry Manillow and her great idol Edith Piaf among others.
The strategy of Sid consisted in show Laura's live talent before a select audience of the music industry, and it worked! soon the Atlantic Records founder, Ahmet Ertegun heard about Laura and tell Sid he wanted to listen her. So it was that she performed a few songs for Ahmet and left him very impressed singing "A Rose And A Tear" at the piano. The audition successfully ended with a moved audience and with a very happy Laura receiving the great news of a record contract with the company. And the rest, as everyone knows, is history.
