Pots and pans and the yellow football shirt have a historical significance in Brazilian culture. In the year of 1985, at the end of the military dictatorship that ruled the country for more than two decades, millions of people took to the streets wearing the bright Seleção t-shirt while banging kitchen utensils as loudly as they could. They were demanding the return of democracy. The demonstrations, known as the Diretas Já movement, are described in the complex lyrics of the classic ‘Pelas Tabelas’, composed by the iconic Chico Buarque in the same year.
Three decades later, the far-right stole these two signifiers as they took to the streets in order to overthrow Dilma Roussef’s leftwing government. The documentary The Coup d’État Factory investigates this moment in history (between 2016 and 2020), when Brazilian democracy began to crumble, culminating in the election of Bolsonaro. Chico Buarque explains in the video: “I lost my song, I can no longer sing it! They [the far-right] inverted the pots and the pans”
Thankfully for all of us, the young black artist Josyara decided to step in and lend both her voice and guitar skills to the classic. Her rendition places the song in a brand new political and artistic context, reclaiming the utensils and yellow shirt misappropriated by the far- right. The raw acoustic guitar is combined with Josyara’s fiery yet gentle chant, with a finishing touch of Brazilian funk. This simple musical arrangement allows for the lyrics to stand out, and listeners to reflect about the recent history of Brazil.
