In the newest episode of For The Record, celebrate the 10th anniversary of Lana Del Rey's groundbreaking major-label debut, 'Born To Die.' The album’s sad-to-the-core aesthetic — featuring string-driven melodies and melancholic lyrics — ushered in a gloomier vibe to the bright, upbeat pop of the early 2010s. Not only did it resonate, but 'Born To Die' helped open the door for the sounds of some of the decade's biggest stars.

Born to Die is the earliest Lana Del Rey album that is commercially available, but it’s not her first: The singer’s self-titled debut LP (which includes the original “Ray” spelling of her stage name) was briefly available on iTunes in 2010, but was never physically released.

The album’s fourth single, “Summertime Sadness,” didn’t chart upon its June 2012 release, but became a sleeper hit in 2013 after French DJ Cedric Gervais remixed the melancholy track into a punchy dance floor anthem. It peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, Del Rey’s biggest hit to date. (Source: Billboard)

Though the low-register tone she displays on Born to Die has become Del Rey’s signature, it was actually a strategic move. As she told the Daily Star in 2011, “People weren't taking me very seriously, so I lowered my voice, believing that it would help me stand out."

The emotionally raw lyrics and gloomy production on Born to Die introduced a darker vibe to the more upbeat sounds of popular music at the time, paving the way for forthcoming sad pop stars like Lorde, Halsey and Billie Eilish.

Taylor Swift declared Lana Del Rey “the most influential artist in pop” while accepting the Woman Of The Decade honor at Billboard’s 2019 Women in Music ceremony. “Her vocal stylings, her lyrics, her aesthetics: they’ve been echoed and repurposed everywhere in music.”
