Because today, February 14, 2022 is Valentine's day we publish one of the greatest love songs ever written. "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a 1957 folk song written by British political singer/songwriter Ewan MacColl for Peggy Seeger, who later became his wife. At the time, the couple were lovers, although MacColl was still married to his second wife, Jean Newlove. Seeger sang the song when the duo performed in folk clubs around Britain. During the 1960s, it became a major international hit for Roberta Flack in 1972, winning Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Billboard ranked it as the number one Hot 100 single of the year for 1972.

This live version is performed by Dutch singer Mathilde Santing, (real name: Mathilde Eleveld, Amstelveen, 24 oktober 1958). Mathilde acquired national fame in 1981 because of her appearances in Sonja Barend's television program 'Sonja op Maandag' (Sonja on Monday). Her debut was released the following year, the 10-inch record Mathilde Santing, with songs by Rodgers & Hart and Todd Rundgren, among others.
In 1986 she won the BV Popprijs at Noorderslag in Groningen. She was the first artist to win this prize. In 1993 the album 'Texas Girl & Pretty Boy' was released, on which Santing performed 14 songs by Randy Newman.

This live performance was recorded and broadcast by AVROTROS in the Edison Gala of March 7, 2002.
