Today, February 19, 2022 is Smokey Robinson's 82nd birthday!
We celebrate this by releasing this unique and rare video where Smokey Robinson meets ABC's Martin Fry who performed 'When Smokey Sings' with his band ABC in the TopPop studio. To his surprise the subject of their song was in the same TopPop studio recording his song 'Just To See Her'. After ABC's 'When Smokey Sings' and the short introduction of Smokey Robinson to Martin Fry, Smokey Robinson sings his single 'Just To See Her'.
William "Smokey" Robinson Jr. (born February 19, 1940) is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, and former record executive director. Robinson was the founder and front man of the Motown vocal group the Miracles, for which he was also chief songwriter and producer. He led the group from its 1955 origins as "the Five Chimes" until 1972, when he announced his retirement from the group to focus on his role as Motown's vice president. However, Robinson returned to the music industry as a solo artist the following year. After the sale of Motown Records in 1988, Robinson left the company in 1990.
ABC are an English pop band formed in Sheffield in 1980. Their classic line-up consisted of lead singer Martin Fry, guitarist and keyboardist Mark White, saxophonist Stephen Singleton and drummer David Palmer. Developed from an earlier band, Vice Versa, ABC achieved ten UK and five US Top 40 hit singles between 1981 and 1990, and their 1982 debut album, The Lexicon of Love, was a UK number one. Their early-1980s success in the US saw them associated with the Second British Invasion. Now essentially a solo project for Fry, ABC continues to tour and released a ninth studio album, The Lexicon of Love II, in 2016.
