🇧🇦 "Hello Sarajevo, we are hearing you!" The powerful words delivered by Eurovision 1993 host Fionnuala Sweeney as Bosnia & Herzegovina's spokesperson attempts to deliver the points from his war-torn country during the voting segment.
🎤 In 1993, with Sarajevo under constant bombardment and shelling, the singer Fazla was determined to get to Ireland to represent his country at its debut #Eurovision.
🌙 Fazla — full name Muhamed Fazlagić — made his way out of the capital under the cover of night, evading snipers as he trekked through mud and up a mountain – losing his shoes in the process.
☎️ One of the most emotional parts of his Eurovision experience can be seen above. Speaking through a terrible connection, the spokesperson from Bosnia & Herzegovina announces that “Sarajevo is calling.” The host replies with words that speak volumes about how Eurovision can help nations feel seen and understood: “Hello, Sarajevo. We are hearing you.”
📻 “We didn’t have a phone, so they were talking to us on a radio station and we are trying to get connection,” Fazla tells our @williamleeadams. “You can hear that sound — one that goes through your bones. And she is saying Sarajevo we are hearing you and then they are saying Sarajevo speaking. I got choked up a little bit. That explains where our people were at the moment. It was probably the most proud moment of my life.”
